Bangor, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls took on in-state rival Husson University Eagles. The Owls lost both at Boucher Field on Saturday afternoon, 9-1 and 8-2.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off an Owls error, bringing one run in, followed by a Kylie Kennedy single that brought in two runs. Sara Packard (St. Albans, ME) ended the drought for the Owls with a SAC bunt to bring pinch runner Hailey Davenport (Chicago, IL) home in the second.
The Eagles offense took flight in the fourth; three more runs coming from a SAC fly, and two singles by Olivia Smith and Tamara Aunchman. Husson's defense continued to shut the Lady Owls out through the remainder of the game. The Eagles put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving them an eight point lead to end the game in six innings.
Jen Jones pitched all six innings and earned a win for the Eagles, only allowing two hits and one run.
The Eagles took game two after another big fourth inning.
The game began with another early run for the Eagles off a single by Madelyn Fowler giving them a 1-0 lead. The Owls tied it up in the second off a wild pitch by Eagles pitcher Aunchman, allowing Madison Exferd to score. Davenport was able to take the lead in the third off another error by the Eagles infield.
A double by Smith tied the game in the fourth. Singles by Morgan Coleman and Kendra Wilson, and a triple by Shelby Burge brought in the other three runs in the Eagles explosive fourth. Smith doubled again in the fifth, while Coleman hit a two run home to give the Eagles an 8-2 lead.
Smith earned the win on the mound for the eagles while pitching the last four innings of the seven-inning game.
The Owls will return to Bangor this Wednesday to play another doubleheader against the Eagles. Game one will start at 3:00 PM while game two will follow at 5:00 PM.
