Orono, ME – University of Maine at Presque Isle took on Pine Manor College at Mahaney Dome, Orono earlier today in a double header. The Owls took the sweep in two high scoring victories, winning the first game 13-0 and the second 13-1.
Scoring started early for the Owls as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first; scoring off a wild pitch, and a double by Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA). Pouring on more runs in the second and third; UMPI shortstop Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) scored off a fielders choice, while Marissa Reagle (Seattle, WA) tripled to bring in another run. Strong hitting by the Owls put pressure on the Gators fielders causing some errors, along with a double by Emily Page (Lincoln, ME), giving the Owls an 8-0 lead.
Ayana Walker (Columbus, GA) hit a solo homer in the fourth, followed by another Pine Manor error and a double by Madison Exferd (Payette, ID) pushing the lead to 11-0. The Owls scored two more runs in the fifth ending. A single by Whiteshield in the bottom of the fifth broke up the Owls no hitter. Sara Packard earned the win on the mound for UMPI.
UMPI wins game two in similar fashion. With some explosive offense in the first the Owls take an 8-0 lead. Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) homered at the first at bat in the second game; followed by a couple errors by the Gators, two single, and a double by Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA). Three hits in the second scored two more runs for UMPI pushing the lead to 10-0.
Pine Manor ended their scoring drought by scoring in the third off an RBI single by Smith. More strong offense by the Owls in the third and fourth added three more runs giving UMPI a 13-1 lead. Garcia gets her first win on the mound for the Owls.
The Owls finish their weekend road trip with another doubleheader with Pine Manor at the Mahaney Dome. Game one starts at 11:00 AM while game two follows.
