AKRON, OH – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (22-16) were unable to plate a run in their season finale in the USCAA National Tournament. Penn State Fayette would take the game by a final score of 2-0.
Fayette would threaten in the first and second innings, stranding two on in both frames. They would finally bring in a run in the third, when Monica Joseph (FR, Perryopolis, PA) singled to drive in a run. With two outs and bases loaded in the fourth, Joseph would strike again, another single to drive in the second run.
Meanwhile the Owls would collet seven hits in the game, but would not get a runner in scoring position until the fifth inning. After a leadoff walk by Sara Packard (JR, St. Albans, ME), UMPI would sacrifice her to second. That threat would be shut down after a line drive to shortstop was snagged, and a groundball to third resulted in the last out of the inning.
UMPI's best threat came in the sixth. With one out Brianna Losee (JR, Pittsfield, ME) and Nicole Marucci (JR, Naples, ME) would both single. After a fielder's choice recorded the second out of the inning, Jackie Peers (FR, Limestone, ME) would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. Penn State Fayette would get themselves off the hook, getting a pop out to end the inning.
Tiffany Markovitch (FR, Brownsville, PA) would get the win in a complete game shutout for Fayette. Joseph would finish the game three for four with two RBI.
For the Owls Marucci and Darrean Thornton (SO, Topsfield, ME) would both collect two hits in three at bats.
