TOPSHAM, ME – The UMPI Owls Softball team (3-1) completed their opening weekend by sweeping a doubleheader against Mass Maritime (0-2) on Sunday. The Owls would come back in the first game to win 4-2 and take the nightcap by a score of 5-2.
Game 1 – UMPI 4, MM 2
The Buccaneers would lead off the bottom of the first with a base hit. An error on a sacrifice attempt would set them up with two runners in scoring position with no one out. UMPI's starting pitcher Sara Packard (JR, St. Albans, ME) would minimize the damage, striking out the next batter, inducing an RBI groundout to short, and fielding her position for the third out by retiring the runner at first on a comeback groundball.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Mass Maritime until the fifth inning. With one out and runners on first and second, the Owls' Jordi Legassie (SO, Presque Isle, ME) would knock a single into right center field to tie the game. UMPI would score two more runs on a fielding error on the very next play, and take a 3-1 lead. An RBI double in the bottom half of the inning by Kaylene Murphy (JR, Randolph, MA) would cut into that lead, but another error for the Buccaneers in the top of the sixth would give the Owls an insurance run. Mass Maritime would go in order in the sixth, and a two-out single in the seventh would not be the spark for their comeback attempt, as UMPI would hold on for the 4-2 win.
Packard would go the distance, giving up just four hits, one walk, and striking out seven. Both of the runs she surrendered were unearned. Delanie Strout (FR, Greene, ME) would go two for three in the game, while Nicole Marucci (JR, Naples, ME) would end up two for two with a run scored.
Game 2 – UMPI 5, MM 2
The Owls would waste no time taking the lead in the second game. Ariel Williams (FR, Frisco, TX) would single to lead off the game and score on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. An error would extend the inning and Packard would pick up an RBI with a successful squeeze bunt. The Buccaneers would cut the two-run lead in half in the bottom of the first as Melissa Cochrane (FR, Walpole, MA) would triple and score on a bunt.
UMPI would add to their lead in the second. Williams would double down the left field line and drive in two, and an error in the third would allow the Owls to score their fifth run of the game. Mass Maritime would get their second run of the game in the fourth, as Murphy would lead off with a double and score on a liner to center, but the Buccaneers would go down in order in the fifth. The game would be ended at that point due to time constraints, and the Owls would win 5-2.
Packard would pitch well again, giving up just two hits and striking out three for the win. Williams would lead the offense going two for three with a run scored, two RBI, and a double. Legassie would be two for two in the game with a run scored.
Cochrane would take the loss for the Buccaneers, lasting just three innings, giving up five hits and five runs, though just two of those runs were earned.
The Owls kick off their spring trip next week as they travel to the College of New Rochelle on Saturday, March 25th. That doubleheader is scheduled to start at
