SOUTH PORTLAND, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle (17-7) took on the Fisher Falcons (0-16) in Softball action on Sunday. The Owls would take both contests by a score of 5-4. The games were played at Southern Maine Community College.
Game 1 – UMPI def. Fisher – 5-4 (8 Inn)
The Falcons would strike early to start the day. In the bottom of the first Mikayla Zimmerman (SO, Corona, CA) would double down the left field line to drive in the first run, and later score on a single by Chrissy Briggs (SR, Rumford, ME), putting the Owls in a 2-0 hole.
The Owls would get on the board in the top of the third, as sophomore Sara Packard (St. Albans, ME) would rip a double to plate a run and cut the deficit in half. It wouldn't be until the fifth that UMPI would get their offense going again. Katie Patenaude (SR, Presque Isle, ME) would double to lead off the inning and score on the next play, an error by the Falcons. Mikayla Churchill (FR, Washburn, ME) would knock in a run with a fielder's choice to give the Owls a lead, which was followed by a ringing double by Amanda Allen (SR, Limestone, ME) to drive in Churchill, and the Owls would have a 4-2 lead.
Fisher would trail all the way until the bottom of the seventh, when they managed to load the bases with two outs. Zimmerman would draw a walk to force in a run, and Briggs would come up with a clutch single to left center to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Hannah Williams would bring in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, executing the sacrifice bunt with a runner on third to give the Owls the lead. Fisher would go in order in the bottom half to seal the UMPI victory.
Carly Bell (SO, Presque Isle, ME) would lead the Owls offensively, going three for four with a walk and run scored. Patenaude and Allen would finish two for four in the game. Packard would get the win, going the distance for UMPI, striking out ten and scattering nine hits.
Game 2 – UMPI def. Fisher – 5-4
Once again, Fisher would jump on the Owls in the first inning. Morgan Selmi (JR, Rohnert Park, CA) would lead off the inning with a double and score on a defensive miscue by UMPI. Zimmerman would later bring her in with a fielder's choice ground out to shortstop, and the Falcons took a 2-0 lead for the second time on the day.
The Owl's Jordi Legassie (FR, Presque Isle, ME) would lead off the third with a single, steal second and advance to third on a bunt. She would then score with two outs on a passed ball, and Patenaude would drive in another run with single up the middle to tie the game.
Patenaude provided a big hit again in the fifth, as with two outs she ripped a double to center field to score Bell. That hit would be followed by UMPI hitters drawing three walks to force in another run, and a fielding error would score a third in the inning, putting the Owls up 5-2.
Fisher would rally in the sixth, and once again it was Zimmerman and Briggs in the middle of it. Zimmerman would single with two on and one out to bring in a runner, and Briggs would lift a fly ball to center to bring in another. The Falcons would load the bases with two outs, but Packard would work out of the jam and strand them all. Fisher would get the tying run on base in the seventh, but Packard would induce a groundball and strike out her fifth batter of the nightcap to give the Owls a sweep of the Falcons.
Patenaude would finish the game three for four with two RBI in the game. Jessica Campbell (SR, Lisbon, ME) was two for two, and Williams would go two for four with a run scored. Packard would earn her second win of the day, once again going the distance and giving up just two earned runs in game two.
The Owls travel to Bangor, ME to take on Husson Unversity on Monday afternoon.
