Southern Virginia Takes Three From Owls

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Looking for its first win of the season, the Southern Virginia University softball team swept Maine-Presque Isle in a triple header Wednesday afternoon at Harvey-Dryden Field. The Knights defeated the visiting Owls 9-0, 11-9 and 7-0 after five innings of play per game.

Knights Starter Jamie Pinkston had seven strikeouts during her time in the circle, allowed no runs and picked up her first two wins of the season, pitching in games one and three.

The Knights combined for 31 hits, 23 stolen bases, and 27 runs against the visiting Owls throughout the three games. The Owls could only manage 9 hits on the day.

Game One: SVU 9 Presque Isle 0

Pinkston threw a five inning 2 hitter in game one.  Owls Mound ace Krista Coffin had both hits and Pinkston allowed no other base runners in her five inning masterpiece.

Game Two: SVU 11 Presque Isle 9

A competitive second game saw both teams score in nearly every inning. The Owls came out and scored two runs in the top of the first, four runs in the third and three in the fourth. The Knights answered back with five in the first inning, two in the third inning and four in the fourth inning.

The Owls had 11 base runners in the middle game, but could not capitalize on 7 errors committed by the Knights.

Game Three: SVU 7 Presque Isle 0

The Knight bats came alive early in game three as they scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and one in the second inning. Knight ace Pinkston was again masterful, allowing only one hit, a first inning hit to Owl sophomore Taylor Cochran.

McKenzie Cox earned her first triple of the season to start the six run rally for the Knights. Evans picked up an RBI with her third double of the season. LaJeunesse, Hegsted, Packard, Pinkston, Thompson and Bair found their way to the base path to help bring in five more runs en route to the 7-0 Knights victory.
