(BUENA VISTA, VA) -- The University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team dropped a pair of games at Southern Virginia University on Tuesday, 11-1 in the opener and 13-2 in the nightcap. Both games lasted 5 innings. The wins improve the Knights record to 10-13. The Owls fell to 0-8.
UMPI will play a doubleheader Wednesday at 2pm and 4pm at Mary Baldwin (VA) College.
Game 1: SVU 11, OWLS 1
The Knights jumped out to a lead with six runs in the first. After scoring five more in the third, the Owls got on the board in the 4th.
With runners on first and third with only one out, Presque Isle pulled off a double steal. Megan Hannigan (Fr./Houlton, ME) broke off 1st and swiped second while Kellie Peers (Sr./Caswell, ME) broke for home and scored on the play.
McKenzy Mackay pitched five innings and earned her 7th win of the season. Krista Coffin (Jr./Presque Isle, ME) (0-6) took the loss.
Game 2: SVU 13, OWLS 2
After giving up two runs in the first, the Owls came back to tie things up in the second inning. With two on and two out, Jessica Campbell (Fr./Lisbon, ME) singled to center for the first two RBI's of her collegiate career.
The Knights added single runs in the 2nd and 3rd but it was still a ballgame heading into the 4th. Down 4-2 however, the Owls ran into trouble in the bottom of the 4th. The Presque Isle defense surrendered 5 walks, an error, and a grand slam, en route to a Southern Virginia 9-run frame.
10 of the 13 runs allowed by UMPI pitching were unearned.
Annie Biggs pitched a complete game to earn her 3rd win of the season. Amanda Allen (Fr./Limestone, ME) (0-2) started and took the loss.
