(STAUNTON, VA) -- Mary Baldwin (VA) College softball doubled its win total for the season with a sweep of a home doubleheader Wednesday over UMaine-Presque Isle, 9-3 and 9-1 (5 innings). The Fighting Squirrels are now 4-30 on the season. The Owls remain winless (0-10).
Presque Isle, who has now played doubleheaders in 5 of the last 7 days will get a much needed day off on Thursday before returning to action on Friday with a doubleheader at Southern Maine Community College. Those games are set to begin at 3pm and 5pm.
Game 1: Mary Baldwin 9, UMPI 3
The Owls jumped out to a lead in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. Jessica Campbell (Fr./Lisbon, ME) led off and was hit by a pitch. Two batters and two passed balls later, Campbell was on third base and scored on an RBI ground out by Krista Coffin (Jr./Presque Isle, ME).
UMPI also scored in the 2nd. After Taylor Cochran (Fr./Topsfield, ME) reached on a fielder's choice, she stole second and came around to score after a couple of Fighting Squirrel errors on the play.
The problem for Presque Isle is that each of those single run innings were answered by multiple run frames for Mary Baldwin who scored 4 in the first and 2 in the second. The Squirrels added single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th to pull away.
Jessica Hogle pitched a complete game 5-hitter to notch the win for MBC. Whitney Donovan (So./Ashland, ME) (0-1) started and took the loss for UMPI.
Game 2: Mary Baldwin 9, UMPI 1 (5 innings)
The Squirrels scored in every inning despite being outhit in the game, 5-3.
The Owls' lone run came in the 4th. With two down and the bases loaded, Campbell lined a single to center to score Donovan.
Amanda Allen (Fr./Limestone, ME) (0-3) started and was saddled with the loss. Janie Brothers went the distance for MBC to earn the win.
