Owls Learn that "Two out of Three Ain't Bad" vs. Canton

(CANTON, NY) --  What was supposed to be a pair of doubleheaders this weekend between the University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team and SUNY-Canton became a tripleheader on Sunday after Saturday's games were washed out by mother nature.  Those that braved Sunday's cold temps and windy conditions were treated to an offensive free-for-all that saw the Owls sandwich 13-10 and 13-9 wins around a 16-7 loss to the host Roos.  The 2-1 record for the day improved UMPI's season tab to 10-20.  Canton now sits at 7-20.

The two teams are scheduled to square off four times next weekend, this time in Presque Isle.  It will be the first, last, and only home games for the Owls this season.

Game #1:  UMPI 13, SUNY-Canton 10

The Owls scored six runs in the first inning and led wire to wire.  The Roos plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to bring the score to 13-10.  With the bases loaded and only one out, Cantonhad a great opportunity to draw even closer.  But starter Krista Coffin (So./Presque Isle, ME) buckled down to retire the next two hitters and preserve the win for UMPI.

After beginning the season 0-4, Coffin has now won 5 of her last 6 decisions to move to 5-5 on the season.  Sunday's victory was no picnic as the sophomore gave up 8 hits and 6 walks leading to 9 earned runs.  But when your team gives you 13 runs of support, you do not need to be perfect, you just need to be clutch and Coffin was that in the 7th.

Having monster games offensively for Presque Isle were 3B Kellie Peers (Jr./Caswell, ME)  (3-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and 1B Danielle Smith (Fr./Phillips, ME) (3-4, run, 3 RBI).  Desiree Smith (Sr./Thomaston, ME) swiped a pair of bases in game one, upping her team-leading total to 24.

Game #2:  Canton 16, UMPI 7 (5 innings)

The Roos got even on the day in game two by exploding for 13 runs in the first two innings off of Owls starter Courtney Bishop (Fr./Saco, ME).  Canton scored a run in all four innings as seven starters had multi-hit games en route to the 16-7 win.

Presque Isle picked up where they left off game one, scoring 4 runs in the top of the first inning before recording their first out.  SUNY-Canton answered back with 7 in the bottom of the frame however thanks to a 2-run home run off the bat of sophomore Emiley Walters (Lancaster, N.Y.) and three unearned runs.

The Owls pulled back to within two at 7-5 in the top of the 2nd on a Desiree Smith RBI ground out that scored Jennifer Brown (Fr./Waldoboro, ME).  Once again the Roos would answer big scoring 6 runs with most of the damage coming from junior Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) who blasted a one-out grand slam that put the home team up 12-5.

Canton pounded out 18 hits on Bishop who went the distance and was hung with the loss.

Desiree Smith and SS Lainey Herring (Jr./Houlton, ME) collected two hits a piece for UMPI.

Game #3:  UMPI 13, Canton 9

In the rubber match, UMPI continued to plate runs in the first inning but this time it was the Roos who could not keep up and a late rally fell short as the visitors notched a 13-9 decision.

Herring was the offensive star in game three going a perfect 3-3 at the plate, scoring three runs, and driving in four.  She also walked twice.

Canton had one more comeback in its tank, scoring five runs in the 6th inning off of reliever Krista Coffin to bring them to within one, 10-9.  The Owls opened up some breathing room with three runs on the top of the 7th and Coffin pitched a scoreless 7th for the save.

Whitney Donovan (Fr./Ashland, ME) started for UMPI and picked up the win pitching 5 innings while giving up 4 runs on 9 hits.
