(RANDOLPH CENTER, VT) -- Two weeks ago, the University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team took a pair of games from Vermont Technical College playing in North Adams, MA. On Friday, the location changed but the results did not. Traveling to Vermont to play the Knights on their home field, UMPI swept a doubleheader from the hosts, 9-6 and 18-5.
The wins improve Presque Isle to 8-19 on the season. VTC is now 3-16.
Game #1: UMPI 9, Vermont Tech 6
The Knights led 2-0 after two innings but seven VTC errors led to 5 unearned runs for the Owls as they charged back for the 9-6 win.
Krista Coffin (So./Presque Isle, ME) picked up the "W" in going the distance for UMPI. Coffin gave up 7 hits in 7 innings, allowing 4 earned runs while striking out five.
The 2-4 batters in coach Peter Coffin's lineup, Kellie Peers (Jr./Caswell, ME), Lainey Herring (Jr./Houlton, ME), and Carolynn Tuck (Sr./Brewer, ME), provided most of offensive support driving in two runs a piece.
C Desiree Smith (Sr./Thomaston, ME) reached base three times and stole three bases.
Game #2: UMPI 18, Vermont Tech 5 (5 innings)
The Owls scored at least twice in each inning on their way to an 18-5 route of VTC in the nightcap.
Courtney Bishop (Fr./Saco, ME) pitched a complete game, 5-hitter, to pick up her 4th win of the season. Bishop fanned 5 while issuing only 1 free pass.
Every Owl starter logged at least one base knock in the 14-hit barrage. The Owls jumped on starter Abby Fusco for four runs in the first inning and by the time she came out in the 3rd, Presque Isle had built a 12-1 advantage.
Desiree Smith was a monster at the plate, going 3-5 with 2 HR's and scoring 5 times. Bishop helped out her own cause at the plate by hitting a home run and scoring twice.
