(TROUTVILLE, VA) -- The University of Maine-Presque Isle softball team played three times going 1-2 on the first day of the Southern Virginia Spring Bash hosted by Southern Virginia University. After a 13-6 win over Southern State Community College the Owls were blanked by Lindenwood-Belleville, 10-0, and fell to Penn State-Mont Alto, 17-3.
The win over SSCC was the first of the season for the Owls.
UMPI 13, Southern State CC 6
Courtney Bishop (Fr./Saco, ME) pitched a complete game giving up 4 earned runs, striking out 5 and walking 1 in earning her first college win. After being tied 5-5 through three innings, the Owls scored 8 unanswered runs to take home the victory. Desiree Smith (Sr./Thomaston, ME) broke the tie in the top of the 4th inning with an RBI single to center that scored Jasmine Cote (So./Limestone, ME). Smith stole 2nd, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly, and scored on a passed ball to give UMPI at 7-5 advantage.
Carolynn Tuck (Sr./Brewer, ME) led the Owls' 19 hit barrage with a perfect 4-4 performance from the plate with 2 triples and driving in 5 runs.
Lindenwood-Belleville 10, UMPI 0
In the second game of the day, the Owls were no-hit in 5 innings by Lindenwood-Belleville's Ally Lumsden. Lumsden struck out 8 UMPI batters and did not walk a batter either for a perfect game. The Owls were hurt defensively by 3 errors and some aggressive LBU baserunning that led to 6 stolen bases.
Krista Coffin (So./Presque Isle, ME) took the loss going 4 innings, giving up 8 ER, walking 7 and striking out none.
Penn State-Mont Alto 17, UMPI 3
The Owls plated 3 runs in the bottom of the first but 11 errors in the field helped PSU-MA score in every frame of the 5-inning blowout. Lainey Herring (Jr./Houlton, ME) started for the Owls but was unable to get out of the first giving up 5 earned runs in 2/3 of an innng.
UMPI managed 5 singles in the nightcap led by Kellie Peers (Jr./Caswell, ME) 1-2, RBI performance at the plate.
The Owls are now 1-8 on the season. They will finish at the Spring Bash with a pair of games on Sunday, a 10am tilt with Clark State Community College followed by a 12pm contest against Virginia University-Lynchburg.
