(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- Coach Peter Coffin and the UMPI softball team hosted their first "Pitching and Hitting Clinic" at Wieden Gymnasium on March 3rd. Proving successful in Coffin's mission to reach out to the Aroostook County athletes, the clinic registered girls from Woodland, Caribou, Limestone, Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle, Mars Hill, Houlton, and Hodgdon.
UMPI softball players demonstrated skills and then tailored teaching based on one-on-ones with the attendees.
"The UMPI pitchers did a wonderful job of teaching the basics of pitching to the younger girls, and demonstrating advanced skills to the high school players," said Coffin who is beginning his first season at the helm of the Owls' program, "the UMPI players also mentored the younger players and did a great job of breaking skills down."
After a morning of pitching instruction, the clinic switched to a hitting focus. A dozen of different hitting stations were set up including the pitching machine, giving the youth plenty of opportunity to expand upon their slugging skills.
The clinic was a great break from practices as the Lady Owls continue to prepare for their first set of games this season. UMPI will travel take on Maine Maritime Academy on March 16th. Start time is 4:00 p.m. at the Orono Dome on the University of Maine campus.
