Softball Drops a Double-Header in Season Opener

N. MYRTLE BEARCH, South Carolina - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team opened their season at the 2011 Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic in North Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday morning. The Lady Owls dropped both games of a double-header, 5-0 and 12-0 (4 innings) against the Spartans of York College in Pennsylvania. With the losses, the Owls move to 0-2 on the year, while York College improves to 7-1.

In the first game of the day, UMPI was led by sophomore Lainey Herring (Houlton, ME)who finished 2-for-3 from the plate, with two singles and earning the only hits of the contest for the Owls. Freshman Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, ME) earned her first loss of the season from the mound, allowing five runs on six hits, four of which were earned; Coffin struck out two, while walking two.

York College scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to bring them to the 5-0 victory over UMPI.

The Lady Owls battled to a 12-0 loss in the second match-up of the double-header, a game lasting only four innings. They were lead by junior Desiree Smith (Thomaston, ME) were went 1-for-2 from the plate with a single, while sophomore Kellie Peers (Caswell, ME)finished 1-for-1 from the plate with a single. Coffin earned her second loss of the day as the right-handed hurler from the mound; Krista allowed 10 runs on 12 hits, while striking out one and walking three batters.

York opened the game up with three runs in the first inning of play, and then exploded in the second for seven runs; the tallied one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to earn the 12-0 win.

"We played a solid first game against a very competitive and talented team," commented Head Coach Terry Cummings, "the second game got away from us. But I am confident once we get our bats going, we will win some games down here."

The Owls have been practicing in Wieden Gymnasium since the beginning of the Spring Semester; this was their first time on an outside diamond.

The Owls return to the diamond on Sunday, March 6th for a three-game day. They will face Wentworth Institute of Technology of Boston in the 9:30 am game of the day.
