N. MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's softball team earned their first win of the season on Sunday morning in an 11-1 decision over Wentworth Institute of Technology at the 2011 Fast Pitch Dreams Invitational in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. With the victory, the Owls improve to 1-2 on the season.
Freshman hurler Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, ME)earned her first win of her collegiate career going five innings of play. Coffin tallied an impressive nine strikeouts, while walking three batters and giving up only two singles on the day. Krista helped her own cause, earning a single in the Owls' six-run inning.
UMPI got it's bats going with a strong sixth inning, putting six runs on the board and followed up with a solid four-run fourth inning. "We were down 1-0 after the top of the first inning," stated Head Coach Cummings, "but our bats come alive and we erupted for 11 runs in the 3rd and 4th inning of play."
UMPI junior 1b Cassie Green (Truro, NS) had two singles and plated two runs, while juniorKathleen Higgins (Cole Harbour, NS) was 2-for-2 from the plate, with two singles and two RBI's. Sophomore Kellie Peers (Caswell, ME) had a RBI double and Carolyn Tuck (Brewer, ME) singled on the day and plated a run for her Owl team. Sophomore Lainey Herring (Houlton, ME) and senior Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) both drew two walks in the contest and each player scored a run in the win. Sister Danni Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) singled, drew a walk, and plated two runs in the game.
The Owl defense only committed one error in the game.
Due to rain, the other two games scheduled for Sunday were cancelled. The Owls return to the field on Monday, March 7th for a three-game day of action from the diamond.
