Lady Owls Earn Doubleheader Win in Conference Opener

LYNN, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team soared past the Falcons of Fisher College on Saturday evening in a doubleheader win to open up Sunrise Conference play. With both victories, the Lady Owls improve to 6-7 on the year.

In the first game of the afternoon, UMPI rolled to the 13-0 shutout win against Fisher. The Owls had a big first-inning effort, plating seven runs en route to the victory.Desire Smith (Thomaston, ME) cracked open the inning with a base-hit single; Smith finished with two singles and an RBI in the game. Senior captain, Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME), singled in the first, while first baseman Cassie Green (Truro, NS) and hurler Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, ME) both earned an RBI in the top of the first. Junior outfielder, Carolynn Tuck (Brewer, ME) smacked an RBI triple in the inning and also plated a run to give the Owls their seventh run.

UMPI tallied two more runs in the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth inning. B. Humphrey finished with a 3-for-4 effort from the plate, including an RBI double in the fourth. Coffin was 2-for-4 in the game, while Tuck earned the 2-for-3 effort. Sophomore Lainey Herring (Houlton, ME) went 2-for-4 from the plate, including an RBI triple in the fifth; catcherDanielle Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) and freshman Ashley Pennartz (Birch Harbor, ME) each singled in the win. 

The Owls scattered 15 hits while committing two errors in the winning effort.

Coffin picked up the win from the mound in five-innings of work; Krista allowed three hits, while striking out four batters and walking just two.

In the second game of the evening, the Owls battled to the 2-1 win over the Falcons. Junior pitcher, Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) earned the win from the mound for UMPI; in a complete seven-inning effort, Moore allowed six hits and one unearned run, while striking out eight batters and walking none.

The Lady Owls scored both runs in the top of the second inning to earn the 2-0 lead. Fisher College answered back in the bottom of the same inning, scoring one run to bring the lead to within one but was held scoreless by the Owls pitching and defense.

In the top of the second, Emily Staples (Trenton, ME) singled to reach base, then was hit home by a huge Carolynn Tuck RBI triple, her second of the day. Desiree Smith followed with an RBI single, plating Tuck and earning the game winning run.

B. Humphrey doubled in the fifth in a 1-for-2 effort from the plate, while twin sister D. Humphrey also singled in the fifth inning.

The Owls rattled off seven hits in the conference win, while committing two errors from the field.

The Lady Owls return to action on Sunday afternoon, April 10th, in a re-match doubleheader against Sunrise Conference team Fisher College. The first game is set to begin at 12:00 noon.
