Softball Sweeps VTC in Conference Weekend
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vermont- The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team earned the 4-0 sweep on the weekend against Vermont Technical College in Sunrise Conference play. With the wins, the Lady Owls improve to 12-9 on the season and 8-0 in conference play.
On Saturday afternoon, the Owls opened the weekend with a 13-0 shutout victory in the first game of the day. Junior second basemanKathleen Higgins (Cole Harbour, NS) led her team from the plate with two-homeruns and three RBI's, while senior captain Danielle Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME)finished 2-for-3, including a two-RBI double in the top of the second inning. Junior outfielder Carolynn Tuck (Brewer, ME) went 2-for-3, plating two runs and sophomore outfielder Lainey Herring smacked a homerun in the top of a big Owl fifth inning surge. Senior captain Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) earned an RBI single in the game, while junior third baseman Desiree Smith (Thomaston, ME) singled and tallied two RBI's in the win.
Freshman Krista Coffin Presque Isle, ME) hurled a complete game no-hitter from the mound; in five innings of work, Coffin struck out five batters and walked just one.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Owls soared to the 19-1 win over the Green Knights. UMaine
Presque Isle scattered 14 hits, while committing just one error in the game.
B. Humphrey led her team with a 4-for-5 effort from the plate, including a double, three singles, and three RBI's. Twin sister, D. Humphrey, garnered six RBI's in the win, going a perfect 4-for-4; Danni tripled, doubled, and singled twice to help her team. Freshman Ashley Pennartz (Birch Harbor, ME) also finished with six RBI's in the game; Pennartz singled and drove in three runs on a triple in the second inning of play. Coffin finished 2-for-2 with two doubles, while seniorMegan Korhonen (Littleton, ME)doubled, singled, and plated two-runs.
Freshman Jennifer Ouellette (Van Buren, ME) singled twice and outfielder Kallie Pelletier (Madawaska, ME) singled and plated two runs.
Coffin earned her second win of the day from the mound; Krista allowed no earned runs, while striking out three and walking two batters in three innings of action. Pennartz saw relief in the bottom of the fourth inning; Ashley allowed one hit, while striking out two and walking two.
On Sunday afternoon, the Lady Owls dominated the first game of the day's doubleheader in a 12-0 decision.
Coffin hurled her third game of the weekend in the shutout victory; Krista struck out seven batters and walked just two in five innings, while only allowing one earned hit.
Brittany Humphrey doubled twice in the win, tallying two RBI's and scoring two runs, while Danielle Humphrey earned a two-RBI homerun in the top of the first as the Owls earned a monster eight run inning; Danni also singled in the game. Desiree Smith went 2-for-2, singling twice and scoring three runs, while Lainey Herring and Kathleen Higgins each singled twice. Carolynn Tuck belted a two-run homer in the top of the first, while Coffin, Kallie Pelletier, and Kellie Peers (Caswell, ME) each singled in the win.
In the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, the Owls earned the weekend sweep in a 17-4 victory over Vermont Tech.
Owl first baseman Megan Korhonen finished with a 3-for-5 effort, with two singles and a two-RBI triple; D. Humphrey doubled, singled and drove in three runs, while B. Humphrey earned two solid doubles in the UMPI win.
Freshman Jasmine Cote (Limestone, ME) tripled, singled, and drove in two runs, while junior Emily Staples (Trenton, ME) singled and earned two RBI's to help her team. LeAnn Abbott (Sumner, ME) singled twice and Jennifer Ouellette singled and scored two runs.
Hurler Ashley Pennartz picked up her first collegiate win from the mound; Pennartz allowed four runs, while striking out three and walking three. Korhonen came in to close the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Pennartz helped her effort from the plate, smacking a two-RBI triple in the top of the first inning; Ashley also singled and plated two runs.
The Owls return to the field on Thursday, April 21st as the team heads to Husson University to take on the Eagles in a non-conference doubleheader match-up. The first game of the afternoon is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
