KENTS HILL, Maine - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team dropped two games against UMaine Farmington on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Kents Hill High School. With the pair of loses, the Lady Owls move to 8-9 on the season and remain at 4-0 in Sunrise Conference play.
The Owls loss a 8-7 heartbreaker in game two of the doubleheader, while being beat in just five-innings in game one, 10-1.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Owls commanded a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior Desiree Smith (Thomaston, ME) drew a walk to lead off the inning. Sophomore outfielder,Lainey Herring (Houlton, ME)singled to place runners at first and second; then senior captainBrittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) belted a two-RBI double, plating Herring and Smith to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Twin sister Danielle Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) followed with a base on balls, and both players stole a base to place runners at third and second. Junior first baseman, Cassie Green (Truro, NS)earned an RBI sacrifice groundout to second, plating B. Humphrey. Junior Kathleen Higgins (Cole Harbour, NS), freshman hurler Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, ME), and junior outfielderCarolynn Tuck (Brewer, ME) each singled in the top of the first.
The Beavers answered in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs to cut the lead to three runs, 5-2. But, the Owl bats were hot in the early innings of the game. B. Humphrey reached base on an error from right field to start the second inning. Two outs later, Higgins hit a RBI single, plating Humphrey. Coffin earned a solid base hit single to move the runners around, then sophomore Kellie Peers (Caswell, ME) singled, scoring Higgins and earning the final RBI for in the Owls in the game.
UMF once again got onto the board with a big second inning; the Beavers scored three runs on only one earned hit. Farmington struck again in the sixth, scoring one more run to bring the score to 7-6.
The Owls were held scoreless throughout the final innings of play, but still held the 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, with just one out remaining and
runners on first and third, UMF's Shannon Mitchell singled to tie the game at 7-7. Beaver Casey Mull followed with a base hit scoring Sam Morency to lead Farmington to earn the 8-7 victory.
Brittany Humphrey singled, doubled and plated two runs to lead her UMPI team, while Krista Coffin and Kathleen Higgins each singled twice with Higgins knocking in two runs.
Coffin took the loss for the Owls with seven hits allowed, four walks and three strikeouts.
In the first game of the day, Farmington pushed across 10 runs over the first three innings to earn the 10-1 win in five innings of action.

Lainey Herring lead her team with two singles, while plating the lone RBI of the game for the Owls. Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) also singled to help her team.
Coffin threw 2.1 innings in the loss with five hits given up, five walks and three strikeouts. Only one of the eight runs charged to Coffin was earned. Moore came in as relief for the Owls.
The Lady Owls return to the field on Saturday and Sunday, April 16th and 17th, as they head to Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, VT, to take on the Green Knights in a two-day doubleheader conference match-up.
