N. MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team battled to a 1-2 effort on the diamond on Monday in a challenging three-game afternoon. The Owls earned their second win of the season in a 7-4 decision against Wentworth Institute of Technology in the first game of the day, and then dropped a game against Penn. State University of Altoona, 5-2. In the third game, the Owls fared well against a talented Milligan College from Tennessee, yet lost a 10-1 ballgame in five innings. After a day of games, the Owls move to 2-4 on the season.
In the first game, the Owls earned the 7-4 win against Wentworth of Boston. Junior Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) earned her first win of the season in a complete game four-hitter effort. Junior Desiree Smith (Thomaston, ME) led the Owls from the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two singles, while Lainey Herring (Houlton, ME) continues her strong offensive performance, earning a single and forced two walks in the win.
Freshman power pitching, Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, ME), went the distance on the mound in the second game of the day, picking up her third loss of the season in a close 5-2 win against PSU Altoona. Coffin allowed five runs on six hits, while striking out one and walking five.
Junior Carolynn Tuck (Brewer, ME) earned a base-on-balls, and then stole second to set the stage for Desire Smith. Smith had a solid outing to once again lead her team on the day, smacking a two-RBI double to give her team their only runs in the game.
The Owls continue to gel defensively as a team; senior short stop, Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME), turned an unassisted double play in the fifth to keep the game close. "We played a great game against very high quality PSU Altoona team this afternoon," commented Coach Cummings. "We got down early in the game, 3-0 in the first, and then played them evenly throughout the remainder of the contest."
In the third and final game of the day, the Owls battled against a highly touted Milligan College team, coming up short in a 10-1 final in five-innings of play.
Junior hurler, Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) earned her first loss of the season; she pitched five-innings, giving up 10 runs on 12 hits. The Buffalo's pitching shut down the UMPI offense with eight strikeout's in the game, as the Owls managed only two hits. Danni Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) earned a double, while twin B. Humphrey singled to help her team in the loss.
The Owls return to the diamond for their final outing at the 2011 Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic; on Tuesday, March 8th, the Owls will face-off against PSU Altoona in a 9:30 am game. This is followed by a double-header against Penn State Berks with the first game set to begin at 11:30 am.
