Standish, ME - The UMPI men's contingent saw a major tightening up of the two to four man pack time at the Runnin' Monks Invitational at St. Joseph's College on Saturday. Rookies Hunter Dionne (Fr. Raymond, ME) and Devon Maynard (Fr. Perham, ME) had breakout races over their still unfamiliar 8K distance in finishing second and third for the Owls, in at 39th/33:14 and 40th/33:22, respectively.
Fourth and fifth scoring positions were secured by Kyle Davis (So. Addison, ME, 43rd/34:02 and Andrew Hunt (Sr. Peterborough, NH, 44th/34:04). The split from the second to fifth scorers was but 50 seconds. Nino Manzella of (So. Queensbury, NY) made the one to five gap 2:02 as a result of his strong performance of 32:01, good enough for 30th overall of the 82 finishers.
The Owls placed seventh in the nine team field ahead of Emerson College and Rivier University. Sean Miller, a rookie from Presque Isle, ran to 56th place in 36:49 while teammate John Agosti (Rexford, NY) ran through injuries in a gritty performance of 48:38/77th. After hosting the high school PVC cross country championships on the UMPI home course next week, the Owls travel to Thomas College on October 19.
