Brunswick, ME - The UMPI Men's Cross Country Team saw a bit of what is in store at the upcoming New Englands in a few weeks. The Bowdoin 8K course proved again to be flat and fast, and the field included many of the stronger teams that will be at the November 10 championships.
A total of 19 teams were represented with Bowdoin coming out on top with (38) points. The Polar Bears were followed by Connecticut Collage (68) and Bates (72). The Owls were 17th, ahead of U-Maine Augusta and Central Maine.
In the separately scored state championship meet the Owls placed 11th of the 13 Maine institutions represented. First year runners brought their experience over 8K from last week's race at Gordon College into play in running faster times. One of these, Nino Manzella (So.Queensbury, NY), continued to round into form in finishing 141st out of the 223 finishers. He was followed by veterans Kyle Davis (So. Addison, ME) (159th, 32:08) and Andrew Hunt (Sr. Peterborough, NH), (172nd, 32:49). Two other rookies, Hunter Dionne (Fr. Raymond, ME) and Devon Maynard (Fr. Perham, ME) finished between Davis and Hunt, placing 163rd (32:24) and 169th, 32:40, respectively. Sean Miller (Jr. Presque Isle, ME) made a marked improvement in placing 191st at 35:02. . Coach Chris Smith indicates that "the guys have been very consistent in their training and are thus reaping the rewards. Our 6:30AM quality sessions are paying off."
