Presque Isle - Nino Manzella (So. Queensbury, NY) led the way for the men's contingent at Saturday's UMPI Invitational opener. Thomas College and Maine Maritime Academy made the trip north for the first home meet for the Owls in a number of years.
Manzella went through the mile at 5:44, establishing a position that would change little throughout. His time of 23:31 was good enough for sixth place for the six kilometers and was but 23 seconds out of fifth place. Kyle Davis (So. Addison, ME) was second in for the Owls having cracked the top ten in ninth position at 24:27.
Other Owl finishers were Andrew Hunt (Sr.) of Peterborough, NH (10 th , 25:18), Hunter Dionne (Fr.) of Raymond, ME (12 th , 25:55), and Devon Maynard (Fr.) of Perham, ME (16 th , 28:13). Sean Miller (Jr. Eureka, CA) of the Owls was unable to compete and will be a valuable addition next week. MMA came out the meet winners with 28 points and were followed by Thomas at 40 and UMPI at 53. Jarrod Ottman of Thomas was the meet winner at 20:36.
The Owls travel to Belfast next week for the MMA Mariners Invitational (MMA) to preview the course to be run for the North Atlantic Conference Championships to be held on October 28.
