Standish, ME – The Owls showed marked improvement in their third meet of the 2016 season with a fifth place finish at Saturday's Runnin' Monks meet in Standish. Visiting U-Maine Farmington won the meet on the strengths of race winner Robbie Hollis and Connor Wagner (third). Following Farmington were. Thomas College, Emerson College, host St. Joes, UMPI, Wheelock College, Mount Ida, and Johnson State.
The return of Sully Jackson (Wilton, ME) and Jake Welch (Duluth, MN) solidified the team finish, with Jackson's top 10 finish pacing the Owls (8th, 29:52). Junior Trevor Levesque (Presque Isle) was second for the PI contingent, in at 30:50 and 14th place. Welch was 29th at 32:61 and was followed by Saul Nunez of Presque Isle (38th, 33:53), James Churchill of Presque Isle (49th, 39:41), Andrew Hunt of Bennington, NH (62nd), Cameron Mathies in 63rd at 43:34 (Hampden, ME), and Justin Lopez of Lincolnville, ME (64th, 43:37). Mathies, showing the great promise evident during his high school years at Hampden Academy, was able to run his first collegiate meet of the season, having been held out thus far due to an injury sustained in the late summer.
The Owls will race all Maine institutions but for division one U-Maine in the state championship meet in New Gloucester next week, hosted by Bates College.
