Owls Finish Strong at Nationals
Syracuse, New York - Wet and soft conditions combined with very hilly going in the 2013 edition of the USCAA National Cross Country meet held at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, NY on November 8th.
A light overnight snowfall added to the difficult footing as three UMPI harriers toed the line for the noon start. Philip Boody, Corey Hebert, and Jesse Sandstrom all started quickly to gain position early on. The field of 183 came through the mile in a mob, making staying out of trouble a priority on the slick course. The order for the Owls was Sandstrom, Boody, and Hebert, an order that changed shortly thereafter as Boody and Hebert came on strong and Sandstrom's coming back from illness had its effect.
Boody, of New Sweden, Maine settled in over the next mile plus before heading out on the extra two kilometer loop the women did not run. This hilly and technical portion saw the stronger runners rise to the top with Boody and teammates Hebert (Baldwin, ME) and Sandstrom (New Sweden) running strongly the rest of the way.
Boody was an eventual 42nd place finisher with a time of 30:39, a time and place very similar, on a more difficult course, as compared to his 2012 performance in Lake Placid a year earlier. Hebert ran a seasons-best time of 31:09, good enough for 56th spot, a considerable improvement on his 2012 finish of 92nd and 33:12. Sandstrom ran a very respectable 123rd and 34:27 over the eight kilometer distance in this his first national championship meet.
