UMPI Previews State Championship Course, Takes 4th at Colby Invitational

An early course return loop at Colby College set the men's mile mark within 100m of the start made for an early look at how this 5 mile race was shaping up.  In hilly and technical terrain such as this, proper pacing was critical to ensure being able to be strong late in this one.

First year runner Jesse Sandstrom optimally paced himself to a 6:04 opening mile with teammates Philip Boody and Corey Hebert but two seconds behind.  Brandon Wade, David Huntley, and Richard Landry all started strongly at 6:25, 7:07, and 7:52, respectively.

After working through the hillier and more technical second mile, the Owls harriers buckled down to push the hills for the first half of the even more difficult third mile which featured rolling and ever changing terrain at the higher elevations of this five miler.  The payoff was a fast fourth, somewhat downhill and fastest mile before retracing steps to the finish.

Boody was again the better finisher, in at 30:58 (19th), followed by Sandstrom (31:03, 21st), Hebert (31:40, 25th), Wade (35:12, 49th), Huntley (41:26, 66th), and Landry (43:01, 68th).  The Owls score of  110 was good enough to best  Husson College of Bangor by two points.

The Maine state meet is up next on October 19th, where the experience gained today will be factored into individual and team strategies as Maine's best will run again on the Mules home course.
