BUCKSPORT, Maine –Maine Maritime Academy placed four runners in the top seven spots to capture its own invitational at Bucksport High School on Saturday. The Mariners defended their meet invitational, while the University of Maine at Presque Isle produced the meet champion in freshman Thomas Grylka (E. Hampton, Conn.).
Grylka finished the three-mile race in 16:43 to take the title from the field of 31 runners. He was followed across the line by a pair of runners from Thomas College, William Janakis (S. Berwick, Maine) in 17:26, and Evan Boudreau (Lamoine, Maine) at 17:31. The Mariners crossed four runners in a pack with Vijay Kataria (Grassy Creek, N.C.) leading the charge with a fourth place finish in 17:32. Evan Vashon (Waterville, Maine) and Wyatt LaPage (Portsmouth, N.H.) crossed fifth and sixth, both clocking 17:41. Cameron Roy (Orrington, Maine) crossed five seconds later, while Noel Deserres-Gauthier (Dover, N.H.) rounded out the MMA scoring contingent in 11th place in 18:30.
Thomas narrowly edged UMPI for second place by six points, 43-49.
The Terriers' harriers produced a ninth place finish in David Tirabassi (Lewiston, Maine) with an 18:01, while freshmen Connor Pinkham (Poland, Maine) and Cameron Brousseau (Rockport, Mass.) rounded out Thomas' scoring with 14th and 15th places, respectively. Pinkham logged a 19:16, with Brousseau crossing nine seconds later.
In addition to Grylka's championship, the Owls landed two more runners in the top ten. Phillip Boody (New Sweden, Maine) placed eighth in 17:50, while Corey Hebert (Baldwin, Maine) crossed 10th in 18:15. Tyler Hilton (Charleston, Maine) ran an 18:59 for 13th place, and Aiden Bothwell (Penobscot, Maine) raced a 19:35 for 17th place to complete UMPI's top five.
Maine Maritime and Thomas return to action next weekend at the North Atlantic Conference Championships. UMPI returns to action next Saturday at Unity.
