General comments:

This was a very difficult course with footing that required skills close akin to a "Dancing With the Stars" episode.  The men ran two primarily wooded loops of just under two miles; a fast opening 700 meters.  The ensuing mile and a half of this long loop required continuous scanning for foot placement around rocks and roots resulting in slower paces at similar efforts for most courses.  Garrett Hilton (Charleston, ME) was the closest in dropping off only 12 seconds the second time around.  Race winner Thomas Grylka (East Hampton, CT) was within 13 seconds.  Grylka's opening loop had him close to the front from which point he continued on to take the lead and extend it through to a very strong finishing kick, 15 seconds ahead of Colby runner Kevin Clarke.  Philip Boody (Stockholm, ME) continued to recover from injury in knocking off 40 seconds from the previous weeks similar distance time.  Tyler Hilton (Charleston, ME) ran the last mile strongly in tightening up his finish close to brother Garrett, only nine seconds back.  Aiden Bothwell (Penobscot, ME) improved markedly from his first collegiate distance race at UNE.  Casey Dorrity (Winterport, ME) came in at 41:39 in this his first race over 5K and Richard Landry (Shubenacadie, NS) rounded out the Owls finishers.

Coach Chris Smith comments:

"With almost our full contingent of runners this was a great chance to see how well all are developing.  Our first year runners are still getting accustomed to the longer distance and today's goal was to start at a slower more optimal pace and try to match times for each of the two identical, longer sub-two mile loops.  All runners today improved upon last weeks times and we're looking ahead to a week of training based on today's result."

Next week:  At the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College, Wenham, MA.
