(BIDDEFORD, ME) -- "Hot and Humid" are not words usually associated with September in the northeast. Yet those were the conditions UMPI runners faced on Saturday during their first meet of the season at the University of New England Invitational.
Running without one of last year's top performers Philip Boody (New Sweden, ME), the Owls finished 8th in the 13 team field. Thomas Grylka (Fr./East Hampton, CT) paced the UMPI men in his first collegiate race with a 22nd place finish. Grylka finished with a time of 31:07 in the 5 mile race.
On the strength of the top three finishers, Lyndon State College recorded an impressive team score of 27 to distance itself from second-place University of Southern Maine (46) and third-place UNE (60).
"The conditions played a big factor," said Owls' head coach Chris Smith, "this was a good chance to see everyone for the first time this season."
The Owls will return to action next Saturday, September 15th, when they host the UMPI Invitational. Next weekend will be Homecoming on the UMPI campus.
