Presque Isle, ME – The Owls men's soccer team earns their first win of the year in a high scoring battle between the Owls and the NVU-Johnson Badgers. This North Atlantic Conference match up gave the Owls their first NAC win of the year as they win 5-4 in the 90-minute game.
Keith Mank (Raymond, ME) earned the win in goal for the Owls, which was well deserved as Mank made some clutch saves toward the end of the game to secure the win, just some of his five saves on the game. The team went back and forth throughout the entire game, finishing with nearly equal stats. The Owls finished the game with 19 shots, 10 being on goal. While, the Badgers finished with 18 shots, 10 on goal.
The Badgers came out with the lead early with a goal in just the 4th minute of the match. A very quick answer by the Owls, came from Nathaniel Stone (Perth-Andover, NB, Canada), his first goal of the year, assisted by Diego Vega (Chicago, IL) not even a minute later. Vega then scored a goal himself in the 7th minute, an assist by Remer Shirley (Lake Worth, FL) to give the Owls the lead. Still not even ten minutes into the game, the Owls scored yet another goal in the 9th minute. This goal coming from Sedrick Mugwira (Lexington, KY), and another assist for Vega.
Still early in the game, at the 16th minute mark, Mugwira put another goal in the back of the net to give the Owls a 4-1 lead, this goal assisted by Nyden Reed (Roque Bluffs, ME). Then came the Badgers, a couple of quick answers in the 20th and 24th minutes, they scored a goal to bring the Owls lead to just one as the teams went into halftime.
The second half, was a different game, as both team picked up their defense. It was the Badgers again striking first to tie the game at four each in the 66th minute. With less than 15 minutes to go in the game Nyden Reed put one in the back of the net after some immense pressure at the Badgers net and giving the Owls back the lead.
The Owls will look to continue their winning streak this weekend in their match vs SUNY Canton Roos, kick off at 2:30 tomorrow.
