Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Soccer Team was in need of a big win at Home on Park Family Field today to keep their NAC Playoff chances alive. The Owls (4-10-1, 0-6) entertained the Husson University Eagles (6-8-2, 4-1-1) who are currently sitting in the 4th position in the North Atlantic Soccer standings one game behind SUNY Canton and Maine Maritime Academy and two games behind Thomas College. Coming into the contest UMPI was in the 7th spot one game out of the mix for a Playoff game.
Husson was aggressive offensively early in the first half putting pressure on UMPI but the Owls held their ground for 17 minutes playing toe to toe with the Eagles. Senior Paxton Oversmith from Hampden Academy put Husson on the scoreboard with a great play when he headed the ball into the net at the 28:03 mark off a deflection from an UMPI defender into the net. UMPI looked as though they would strike back quickly and tie the game when Husson goalie Benjamin Powell came way out of the net and Ansumana Morrow (So. Presque Isle, ME) got behind him for what appeared to be an open shot. Eagle defender Cody Halvorson came out of nowhere to make a diving foot save directly infront of the goal.
With less then 5 minutes left in the opening half the visitors would up their lead to 2 to 0 on a goal by Madawaska grad Ian Lee, assisted by Alvaro Valls.
3 minutes into the second half the Eagles would secure the victory with a third score when sophomore forward Nathan Firlings put one in the back of the net unassisted. Ferlings would knock home another goal at the 80:53 mark on a pass from Joao Passoni for what ended as the final score of 4 to 0.
Me-Presque Isle definitely missed the offensive play of injured midfielder Andre Rossignol. The Owls leading scorer had to sit out today with an ankle injuy and they hope to have him back for the games this weekend. Owls Goalie Caleb Thompson (So. Washburn, ME) had 3 saves facing 7 shots on net and Eagles goalie Powell had 1 save on the afternoon. Husson held a 17 to 3 advantage on shots and a 4 to 1 advantage on corner kicks.
Next up: UMPI hosts the University of Maine at Farmington Saturday, October 20th at 2:30PM.
