CASTINE, Maine – The UMaine-Presque Isle Men's Soccer Team traveled to Castine and dropped a 2-0 decision to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action played at Ritchie Field on the Campus of MMA.
The Home team Mariners improved their record to 6-6-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the NAC, while UMPI drops to 4-9-1 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.
The Owls played straight up with the Mariners for nearly the entire first half before senior Trevor Richards of Greenville, Maine scored his first goal of the season late in the first half to break-up over 43 minutes of scoreless play, on an assist from Gerald Aquino. The Mariners added an insurance goal at the 52:00 mark when midfielder Evan Backus of Wilton, Maine found the back of the net for his third goal of the season on a pass from Matthew Caron.
Keeper Caleb Thompson (So. Washburn, ME) stopped eight shots in the loss for the Owls, while senior Joshua Weeks earned the victory in net for the Mariners, collecting one save.
UMPI struggled for offensive opportunities against MMA but played a solid game in the midfield area and defensively. The Mariners outshot the Owls 17-1 and took two corner kicks while UMaine-Presque Isle took one.
