Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Soccer Team (4-8-1) and the Unity College Rams (5-7) battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of today's match at Park Family Field in an evenly played first half. The Owls did have a slight advantage with 10 shots overall and 6 on goal while the Rams had 7 total shots with 3 on net. UMPI keeper Caleb Thompson and Unity goalie Sam Napper both made a couple of nice saves early on.
The game remained 0 to 0 until 28 minutes into the second half when UMPI was able to strike first on a goal by midfielder Ansumana Morrow (So. Presque Isle, ME) and assisted by Jacob Worthley (So. Houlton, ME).
It wasn't until the 76:01 mark of the game when Junior forward Nevin Sweeney scored the equalizer for the Rams. UMPI was able to put several shots on goal late in the game and Owls Keeper Thompson also, made another great save in the final minutes of play.
It appeared that the game was headed for a second overtime period until sophomore forward Cameron Leach connected on an unassisted goal at the 99:52 mark to secure the win for the visitors and to send the Owls home with a disheartening loss.
Unity goalie Napper finished the afternoon with 9 saves on 10 shots on goal while UMPI goalie Caleb Thompson (So. Washburn, ME) had 6 saves. Corners were even at 4 apiece.
Next up: UMPI will travel to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, October 13th for a 3:30PM game with the Mariners.
