Presque Isle, ME - The UMPI Men's Soccer Team ran into a very talented North Atlantic Conference opponent today when SUNY Canton of New York came to town and shutout the Owls 8 to 0 at Park Family Field.
The Owls (4-6. 0-3) got behind very early in the match to the visiting Kangaroos (4-4-2, 2-1) when senior Kyle Smith put one in the net 2:46 into the contest. Smith, a midfielder, would score again just four minutes later on a feed from Will Austin and the Owls quickly found themselves down 2 to 0. At the 29:04 mark, junior Edward Malinoski drilled a shot past UMPI keep Caleb Thompson and Brett Anderson would score on Autin's second assist ten minutes later to send SUNY Canton into the halftime break with a commanding 4 to 0 lead.
UMPI had a couple of opportunities early in the second half when Ansumana Morrow (So. Presque Isle, ME) would drill 2 shots on goal that were both saved by Kangaroo goalie Mouhammed Thiam to keep the Owls off the scoreboard and any thoughts of a possible comeback.
The skilled passing attack of SUNY Canton eventually led to several more scoring chances and the Kangaroos connected on second half goals by Dustin Brown, Smith with the hat-trick, Brett Anderson's 2nd goal of the day, and a goal by Conner Morse. Connor Bruyn assisted on two of the goals.
Owls goal keeper Caleb Thompson (So. Washburn, ME) recorded 10 saves on the afternoon while Thiam had 2 stops in goal for SUNY and fellow keeper Tyler Peterson also, had 2 saves.
