RANDOLPH CENTER, VT – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Soccer team (0-1) opened their season on the road this afternoon. Despite matching the Vermont Tech Knights (1-1) shot for shot, the Owls would drop a 3-0 decision on the road.
The two teams would trade shots on goal throughout the first half. Brandon Fuller (SR, St. Albans, ME) and Chris Udobe (FR, Nigeria) would see their goal opportunities rebuked, while Matt Manter (SR, Caribou, ME) would pick up a couple of saves on the defensive end. The two teams would play to a scoreless tie at intermission.
The Owls would miss on some opportunities early in the second half. The Knights would respond in the 53rd minute with a goal by Matt Brien (SR, Colchester, VT). The Owls would keep some pressure on Vermont Tech over the course of the next few minutes, but the Knights' defense was up to the challenge. UMPI would have three shots in the span of seven minutes, but could not connect on any of them. In the 71st minute the host team would double their lead. Brien would assist Scott Durkee (SO, Chelsea, VT) for the second goal of the match.
The Owls would get a few more chances at goal after that, but could not find the mark. Vermont Tech would add to their lead with 11:31 remaining in, and would not allow UMPI another chance at goal.
Udobe would lead the team in chances, putting three shots on goal for the Owls. Manter collected seven saves in the effort.
The Owls will travel to Johnson State (1-0) tomorrow to take on the Badgers. Johnson State defeated Vermont Tech on Friday in their opener by a score of 5-3. Sunday's game is scheduled to start at noon.
