RANDOLPH, VT – For a second day in a row, the Owls Men's Soccer Team (3-9-1) lost a closely fought match by one goal. The Vermont Tech Knights (5-9) would score a late goal to take a 2-1 victory.
The Knights got on the board first, after turning away UMPI's opening scoring attempt. Phillip Hepburn (SO, Milton, VT) would find the back of the net in the fourth minute, and Vermont Tech would have a decisive advantage in the first half with eight shots to the Owls' three. The Owls would take advantage of one of their few opportunities just before half, when Mohamud Abukar (SO, Lewiston, ME) would connect on an unassisted goal.
The second half would see a turn in the momentum, as the Owls would see an increase in their opportunities. Vermont Tech's defense would stand it's ground however, and keeper Scott Durkee (FR, Chelsea, VT) would collect five goals on the afternoon, keeping UMPI scoreless in the second half. With time winding down, the Knights would get some chances to take the lead. After missing wide on two attempts, the third time proved to be the charm so to speak, as Matthew Brien (JR, Colchester, VT) would get an assist from Hepburn and score the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute. The Owls would put together one more effort, but Durkee was up to the challenge, collecting his final save to preserve the 2-1 victory for the Knights.
The Owls will return to the road next weekend and take on Hampshire on Saturday at 3 PM. They will then finish their trip with Fisher on Sunday, another 3 PM start.
