MACHIAS, ME – The Owls Men's Soccer team (0-4) came out on the short end of a high scoring contest at the University of Maine at Machias (3-0) on Friday. The Clippers would take the upper hand and extend their lead in the first half and wind up with a 9-4 victory.
Machias kicked off the scoring early by knocking in a goal in the first minute of the game. Haidar Al-Freiy (FR, Gray, ME) would give the Clippers a two goal lead in the seventh minute, and the Owls found themselves in a hole. Cody Blair (SO, Ashland, ME) would put UMPI on the board in the 21st minute, but the host team answered back on the very next possession. The shootout continued as Blair would assist Derek Healy (SR, Hanover, MA) to make the score 3-2 in favor of Machias. The momentum would swing in favor of the home team at that point as the Clippers would find the net on three unanswered goals before the half, giving them a 6-2 lead going into the break.
The tough task of coming back in this matchup became more daunting when Machias added a goal in the 51st minute. Brandon Danforth (SO, East Millinocket, ME) would answer back with an unassisted goal three minutes later, but Machias would take control from there. Al-Freihy would complete a hat trick with his third goal, and the host would tack on another goal to put the game out of reach. Sean Barbosa (JR, Caribou, ME) would find the net in the 76th minute, but the Owls were unable to dig out of the hole, and Machias would take a 9-4 victory at home.
