CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle battled back from an early deficit, but fell short, losing to Pine Manor 4-3.
The Gators jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Both of the initial goals came in the 17th minute, and the host team seemed to have control of the game at that point. In the 30th minute Derek Healy (JR, Hanover, MA) got the Owls on the board, scoring an unassisted goal. Pine Manor answered back quickly, as Brian Wade (FR, Connelly Springs, NC) scored his second goal of the game to extend the Gator lead. In the 38th minute Healy's corner kick was received by Sean Barbosa (JR, Caribou, ME) who set up Brandon Danforth (FR, East Millinocket, ME) for his first goal of his college career. The Gators led 3-2 at the half.
Pine Manor came out of the break firing and extended their lead in the 48th minute. Shaquille Sailsman (FR, Hartford, CT) connected on his third goal of the year. UMPI continued to fight and in the 78th minute, Barbosa was credited with his second assist. This time it was Cody Blair (FR, Ashland, ME) that found the net to cut the lead. Time would run out on the Owls, and their comeback efforts would fall short, as the Gators took a 4-3 victory.
UMPI will travel to Portland to take on Southern Maine Community College. The game is scheduled for 2 PM.
