PRESQUE ISLE – The U Maine Presque Isle Owls played host to the St. Joseph's College Monks on Friday. The Monks got four goals from three different freshmen to lead them to the 4-1 victory.
Brett Mattos (FR, Mahopec, NY) scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute to put the Monks up early. The Owls would hang tough early, and matched the energy and physicality of the visiting team. In the 15th minute, Derek Healy (JR, Hanover, MA) had a look at the goal, but chose to pass it up. Teammate Sean Barbosa (JR, Caribou, ME) made that decision pay off as he took that pass and hit a shot that rattled the right post of the goal. The ball trickled across the goal line before settling into the left side of the net to tie the game at one. For the next twenty minutes the two teams would trade looks at the goal. The high paced, back and forth game saw both teams miss some opportunities. It wasn't until the 39th minute that the tie was finally broken. St. Joe's Jeremy Caruso (FR, Pembroke, NH) found the net, giving Austin Bell (SO, Gorham, ME) his second assist of the game. With just a minute to go before the half, Mattos would add his second goal of the game. The Monks would tack on an insurance goal in the second half, and the Owls weren't able to connect on any of their opportunities as the Monks would take the 4-1 win on the road. Caleb Bragg-Grady (JR, Whitefield, ME) would record 11 saves in the losing effort.
The Owls will play their last scheduled home game of the season on Wednesday, September 30th against Fort Kent. The game will kick off at 3 PM.
