Lyndon State ran its record to 2-0 on the season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle In the final round of the Lyndon Kick-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Lyndon State broke a scoreless tie at 35:53 mark of the opening half when Eric Nelson picked up a loose ball just inside the penalty box, shifted the ball to his left and buried a shot in to far right side of the net. Only the efforts of Owl goalkeeper Caleb Bragg-Grady, who made 10 saves in the contest, kept the game close.
Early in the second half, the Hornets upped their advantage to 2-0 as Paul Donais and Hunter Torrey combined to set up Dylan Cherko for his first collegiate goal. Torrey dropped a touch pass to Donais in the left corner of the field and he pushed a pass through to Cherko, who buried a shot into the far right corner of the UMPI net.
Lyndon maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest behind a solid defensive effort that allowed Presque Isle only one shot in the last 36 minutes of play. For the match, the Hornets outshot Presque Isle 23-7 and held a 12-5 advantage in corners kicks.
The Owls (0-1-1) will next travel to St. Thomas of New Bruswick on Wednesday, September 3. Action starts at 6pm.
