(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- USCAA #8 University of Maine-Machias men's soccer team got all it could handle and more from a very game UMaine-Presque Isle squad before ultimately pulling out a 3-2 win on Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory, Machias moves to 16-3 on the season. The Owls fall to 6-10.
Early in the match, UMPI looked prime to avenge a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Clippers back on September 12th. Kobe Ashkir (So./Portland, ME) scored two goals within two minutes of each other in the first half to give the Owls a 2-1 lead at the time.
The Clippers, had an uphill battle on Wednesday partly due to mother nature and partly their own doing. Wednesday's contest was originally scheduled as a home match for UMM however recent rains in southern Maine made their field unplayable and necessitated the venue shift up to Presque Isle.
Then, in between Ashkir goals, Clips' forward Juan Manuel Solares picked up a yellow and red card in succession, causing his ejection from the match and forcing UMM to play a man down for the rest of the afternoon. Ashkir immediately took advantage with his 2nd goal in the 22nd minute and the Owls took that 2-1 advantage into the break.
Machias did not waste much time in tying the game out of halftime as Brodie Emory found the back of the net 3 minutes in to knot things up at 2-2. The teams then played even until Tyler Pelletier scored the eventual game winner with help from Audel Gonzalez who picked up the assist at 72:35.
Me.-Presque Isle has one more contest on its 2012 schedule, a home battle with USCAA #1 UMaine-Fort Kent on Saturday. That match will begin at 1pm. It will be senior day for the Owls as the team will hold a short ceremony prior to the start for departing seniors Kyle Corrigan (Sr./Caribou, ME), Will Cole (Sr./Truro, SN), and Josh MacKinnon (Sr./Lismore, NS).
