The Association of (NCAA) Division III Independents named women's soccer forward Lainey Herring and men's soccer defender Lucas Bartlett, both from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, its Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of September.
Herring, a senior from Houlton, Maine, is her team's leading scorer with 14 goals through eight games. She started the season with a hat trick against Vermont Tech in a 7-2 win on Sept. 1. In a 10-2 victory at Fisher College on Sept. 29, she netted six goals.
"I am very honored and thankful," said Herring of the award, "I would not be in this position if it wasn't for my teammates and coaches!"
Herring is a Physical Education major and has also contributed six assists on the season, ranking her second on the team. Additionally, she is the school record holder for goals scored in a career.
Bartlett is a junior from Bradley, Maine. He has been the leader of the defense this season, as evidenced by the Owls having already eclipsed last year's win total with a current record of 5-6. In a win at Vermont Tech on Sept. 1, he provided an assist on the game's opening goal. The Owls went on to win, 3-2. Bartlett currently holds a 3.77 GPA as an athletic training major and serves as one of the team's captains.
"Lucas has anchored the Owls defense this season and has been a team leader on the field as well as in the classroom," said Owls' coach Alan Gordon. "He is an outstanding young man and a credit to our university."
