(RUTLAND, VT) -- Joel Massa (So./Millbury, MA) scored two goals and assisted on a third as the University of Maine-Presque Isle men's soccer team defeated the College of St. Joseph (VT), 4-1. It was the second win in as many days for the Owls in Vermont as they defeated Vermont Tech 3-2 Saturday afternoon.
Massa had a great opening weekend, accounting for the game-winning tally against VTC on Saturday before his 5 point outburst against the Saints on Sunday afternoon. In addition to his two goals, Massa found Kobe Ashkir (So./Portland, ME) for another Owls' score.
Possibly just as important as the 2-0 start for UMPI, the team may have found in Massa, some of the scoring punch that they lost when 2011 UMPI Male Athlete of the Year Craig Maffei graduated in spring.
"This is an excellent start to the season, to get two quality wins," offered Owls' head coach Alan Gordon.
The 2-0 start for the Owls matches the record UMPI posted to begin last year. In the pre-season, Gordon stated that an invitation to the USCAA national tournament is one of his team's goals. Two wins this weekend over USCAA Yankee Conference opponents is a good start in that direction.
The Owls will return to the pitch this Thursday, September 6th when they travel to Canada to face St. Thomas College of New Brunswick. The match is set to begin at 6pm.
