Presque Isle, ME, 9/24/11 – University of Maine-Fort Kent men's soccer team is currently ranked #1 in the USCAA. On Saturday, they showed the University of Maine-Presque Isle why. Eight second half goals scored by the Bengals blew open what had been a close game and gave them a 10-2 victory, spoiling homecoming for the Owls.
It was a different story in the first half. UMFK (7-1) drew first blood when Phathiizwe Sacolo scored at 20:04. When Kennard Brown put the Bengals up 2-0 at 34:41, it looked like the route could be on early. However just before half, UMPI's Germaine Chambers (Fr./Punta Gorda, FL) took a pass fromWill Cole (Jr. Murray Siding, NS) and squeezed it past UMFK goalkeeper David Girouard to cut the Bengal lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
The 2nd half began with a flurry of scoring. Fort Kent's Jermaine West scored two minutes in to put his squad up, 3-1. UMPI's Craig Maffei (Sr./Readfield, ME) responded with a header off a free kick less than a minute later to bring the Owls back to within one at 3-2. After that however it was all Bengals, as they finished the game running off the contest's final 7 goals.
With the win, UMFK retains the "Potato Barrel" the coveted reward for the winner between the two schools each year.
UMPI (2-5) will play next weekend on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st when they have back-to-back contests at SUNY-Canton. Game times are set for 7pm and 3pm respectively.
