Late 1st Half Goals Lead to Owls' Victory

Unity, ME 9/5/11 -- Midfielder Craig Maffei (Sr./Readfield, ME) scored two goals, the second coming on a penalty kick 30 seconds into the 2nd half to give his University of Maine - Presque Isle men's soccer team a 5-2 lead over hosts Unity College. The Owls went on to defeat the Rams by a final count of 6-2.

UMPI jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead 20 minutes into the contest, piling up 25 shots compared to 0 by Unity in that same span. But then a younger lineup put in by Owls' coach Alan Gordon gave a brief period of hope for Unity, who took advantage with two quick goals of their own to momentarily tie the game at 2 apiece.

Asked if he had worries that he substituted too soon, Gordon said "I had my thoughts. But I knew there was a good chance we'd still get some scoring chances the rest of the way."

The 22-year veteran coach was right. By the time the first half had come to a close, midfielders Joel Massa (Fr./Dover Foxcroft, ME) and Roland Thibodeau (Fr./Caribou, ME)had found the back of the net to give the Owls a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.

The win moves UMPI to 2-0 on the young season. The Owls will next play in the team's home opener next Saturday, September 10th when they host Maine Maritime Academy. Game time is set for 3:00pm.
