Close Call goes Against Owls in OT
Presque Isle, ME 9/10/11 – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer player Abdullah Alkhavyat broke loose during a scrum in front of the opponent's net a little over 3 minutes into overtime against the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday. Alkhavyat got free just enough to get a high and hard kick at the goal that deflected off the top crossbar and came straight down in front of the goal. At least that is how it appeared to some. Owls' and Mariners' players scrambled for control of the ball after it hit the ground, one desperately trying to clear the zone and the other desperately trying to get it into the goal. Until an official right on top of the play came in and ruled that the ball did not come straight down, instead it had landed just inside the plane of the goal, giving MMA a 2-1 road victory.
Early in the contest a close game, let alone a Mariner win, seemed unlikely. Owls' midfielder Craig Maffei (Sr./Readfield, ME) scored on a header a little more than 4 minutes into the game off a corner kick from teammate Kyle Corrigan (So./Caribou, ME).UMPI was consistently on the Mariner side of the field in the first half, outshooting MMA 9-2 and leading 1-0 at the midway point.
In the second half though, it was the Mariners that were the more aggressive team, spending much of their time in the UMPI zone. By the midway point of the 2nd half, MMA had tied the game up on a Nate Tipton rebound goal. After getting only 2 shots in the first 45 minutes, Maine Maritime had 15 in the 2nd half and overtime including the only 3 shots that were taken in the extra frame. That is compared to 2 from UMPI in the same span.
The Owls will not have much time to dwell on the tough defeat however as rival UMaine-Farmington rolls into Presque Isle tomorrow, Sunday September 11th, for a 2pm tilt
