LEWISTON, ME -- The University of Presque Isle men's nordic skiing team traveled south to take part in the Bates Carnival this past weekend. Three UMPI skiiers took on the 10K, three-lap course as the Owls finished with 17 points, good enough for 11th out of 12 teams.
Joey Bard (So./Woodland, ME) finished 45th overall with a team best time of 29:13.4. The performance was a career best for the second year skiier by a large margin.
"(Joey) had a bit of a breakthrough today," said Owls' Coach Paul Stone, "he finished hard over his second two laps to move up 20-25 places and finish in the top 50, significantly better than all his finishes from last year."
Justin Fereshetian (Sr./Turner, ME) skied a great first lap with the eventual 7th place finisher but faded a bit in the last two lap from the effort to finish as the third scorer for UMPI with a time of 30:51.0 (81st overall).
Andrew Nesbitt (Fr./Williamstown, MA) continues to improve after a December illness almost derailed his season. Nesbitt finished the course with a time of 30:39.7 (74th overall).
UMPI skiiers will next compete on January 27th at the University of New Hampshire Carnival in Jackson, NH.
