Owls Finish 6th at Farmington

NEWRY, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington senior Orion Cochrane (Greenville, ME) was one of three competitors to shoot a low round of 76 to finish atop the leaderboard at the UMaine-Farmington Golf Invitational, held Thursday at the Sunday River Golf Club.

The University of Maine-Presque Isle, coming off a pair of invitational wins last season finished in 6th place with a final team score of 350.  USCAA Golfer of the Week Reynold Brown (So./Essex, CT) and Mike Balmer (Sr./New Smyrna Beach, FL) carded 85 to lead the Owls.  Allen Conner (So./Stonington, ME) was one stroke back at 86.  Anthony Batchelder (Jr./West Enfield, ME) and Eric Brown (So./Caribou, ME) rounded out the Owls scoring with 94 and 100 respectively.

"The Robert Trent Jones Jr designed Sunday River course won on Thursday," said Owls' coach Dan Hotham.  "The visually stunning, but diabolically deceptive course, with lightning fast greens proved to be too much for our team, and most of the other teams as well.  Only 6 scores in the 70's were  out of 40 excellent collegiate golfers."

Overall, UMaine-Farmington finished fourth out of eight teams after carding a total of 332. The University of Southern Maine shot a 320 to win the event, while the University of New England was second with a 325. Husson University shot a 326 to finish third.

The Owls will be in Bangor, ME this weekend to compete in the Husson University Tournament on Saturday.  Tee time at Penobscot Valley Country Club is set for 11am.
