The University of Maine-Presque Isle men's golf team was back in action this weekend playing in the Eastern Maine Community College Invitational on Saturday, September 24 and in the Colby Invitational on Sunday, September 25.
In cloudy and wet conditions on Saturday, the UMPI team won its 4th invitational of the season at PVCC with a season best team total of 316. UMaine-Machias finished 2nd with 332 and EMCC was 3rd with 375. Other teams who participated were UMaine-Augusta (384) and Northern Maine Community College (no team score).
Reynold Brown (R./Essex, CT) won his fourth medalist title of the year with a five over par 77. EMCC's Kasey Knight and UMM's Steve Simmonds tied for second with 78s. UMPI's Mike Balmer (So./New Smyrna Beach, FL) and DJ Conley (Fr./South Portland, ME) and UMM's Barrett Craven tied for 3rd with 79s.
On Sunday the team participated in the Colby Invitational held at the Waterville Country Club. Most tournaments are individual stroke play events; however, the Colby tournament is a team scramble. Each school entered two, three-man teams who scramble then both scores are added to determine a team score.
First place went to the Colby white team with a 121 team total. Tied for second were UMPI and Bates with a 131 and MMA finished in 3rd with a 132. Colby blue finished 4th with 138.
The UMPI white team consisted of R. Brown, Balmer and Harris posted an impressive 63. UMPI's blue team of Conley, E. Brown and Batchelder shot a 68.
UMPI is scheduled to be back in action on October 4 when they travel to Barring View Country Club to play in the UMaine-Machias Invitational.
