Springfield, MA – The UMPI Owls men's basketball team finished their final tipoff tournament of the year at Western New England University. The Owls played Bowdoin College in the conciliation game of the tournament, where the Polar Bears would win 76-57 despite a hard fight by the injured Owls team.
The Owls came out of the game with a chip on their shoulder from their loss the previous day. The Owls quickly came out to a 14-7 run in the first five minutes of the game. The Polar Bears went on a run themselves and brought the score even at 21 after the first 10 minutes. Bowdoin continued their run as they slowly increased their lead to ten points going into the half.
Another five minute run by UMPI brought the score to 42-37 after a made jumper by Gilbert Jean Mendez. The Owls with many missing players due to injuries and illness, the players ran out of gas but did not stop fighting, while the Polar Bears slowly increased their lead. A big run by Bowdoin put the game away despite the defensive effort from the Owls.
Senior captain Griffin Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME) led the Owls in not only scoring but also leading the offense to a hot start. Guerrette finished the game with 21 points on 10-20 shooting. Parker Onorato (Bath, ME) along with three other Owls finished with seven points, while Onorato was able to grab seven boards and four steals to add to his stat sheet.
The Owls will have some time off before facing off against the University of Maine at Augusta 11/30, followed by their first North Atlantic Conference game on Saturday the 4th of December.
