Presque Isle, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls defeated the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a home game. The Owls found themselves down one at the half before fighting to gain the lead early in the second half and eventually fighting off the Mariners for the win. UMPI earned the 70-62 victory on Parker Thompson's (Washburn, ME) senior day.
The Owls came out strong early in the game, giving them an 18-9 lead in the first ten minutes of the game. The Mariners answered back with a run of their own, giving them the lead off a 12-5 run to end the first half, Mariners lead 31-30. MMA continued to score early in the second half bringing their lead up to ten off a 9-0 run. The Owls quickly answered with a run of their own, scoring 16 straight points without giving up a single point to the tough Mariners offense.
UMPI was able to maintain the lead after some more back and forth play until an 8-2 run by the Mariners, led by back-to-back 3's by senior Riley Jorgenson, brought them within three points with just under two minutes left in the game. After trading two-point field goals, the Owls milked the clock and eventually got the ball to freshman Gilbert Jean (Dunedin, FL), who sunk an open three to put the game away.
Akhe McMichael (St. Petersburg, FL) led the Owls in scoring with 26 points off the bench. Shooting 9-14 from the field and 4-6 from the three. Also adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Nick Perfitt (Houlton, ME) finished with a game high 12 rebounds to go along with his six points. After a nine-point first half, Jean finished with 12 points to go along with a stellar defensive game. Junior captain KJ Minter (Elkton, MD) yet again finished one rebound shy of a double-double with a 10- point, nine-rebound performance off 50% shooting.
