Presque Isle, ME – The Univeristy of Maine at Presque Isle men's basketball team picked up their first North Atlantic Conference win this evening. The Owls hosted Maine Maritime Academy, wining 86-78 despite the Mariners late game comeback.
The Owls started off with some hot shooting, behind Griffin Guerrette's (So. Presque Isle, ME) 24 points in the first half. The Owls continued to keep their energy up in the second half after being up 11 in the end of the first. UMPI came out with a 14-2 run to start the second half, with all five starters contributing to that run. The lead eventually settled to a 17 point lead for the Owls with 5 minutes to go in the game. The Mariners bench would go on an 11-2 run in a four minute span to bring the game within eight. The Owls would get some much needed stops to end the game and hold off the tough Mariners team.
The Owls finished with five players in double digits. Guerrette led the way with 31 points off 11-19 from the field. Shyquinn Dix (Jr. Stamford, CT) had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals. Te'Von Hines (Sr. Alexandria, VA) had yet again another high percentage night with 12 points on 60% shooting with eight rebounds to go along with it. DeAndre Duncombe (Jr. Port St. Lucie, FL) finished with 11 points on the night to go along with his impressive performance on the defensive end. Wilburn Griffith (Sr. Queens, NY) finished with ten points off of 5-8 shooting.
The Owls look to keep their win streak alive with a game tomorrow vs Fisher College, 2:00 PM tip.
